KENTUCKY FAMILY REUNION 2008

We decide at the last minute to go to a family reunion in Kentucky this past weekend. My parents were coming to visit us anyway and decided that we would make the trip and see who we could see and reconnect with. On the way, we saw this sign. This is where my Mother was born - Hyden. And this is as close as we got to it!
This is the single land road we found ourselves on for the last part of the trip. We were in the mountains of Kentucky for sure!
And we were not sure where we were... most of the time!! But it was great fun. We were going to a reunion where my Mother was connecting with a side of the family that she had not seen in many years and was wondering if she might recognize anyone!
And all our worries were over when we stepped outside the van. Everyone came to greet us and made of feel very much part of the "McIntosh" clan. This is Karl McIntosh. He reminded Mother they used to fight - since they were the oldest cousins. My Mother says she doesn't remember fighting with him, but if she did - she was sure she won!! Ha!
My Daddy, Mother, Clarence and Tilda (pronounced Tildy). Tildy was a firey spirit!! She was very enjoyable!
This is Rosco Burns. He is a cousin by marriage. He sang mountain music, just like I remember hearing when I was a little girl. Just some of the goodies we had at the reunion. I thought it was so fun to see the McIntosh name written!Mother is just standing in the midst of the crowd. You can see how happy she is. It was such a fun day for all of us ... but especially her. This is on the steps of the First Church Of God in Irvine, Kentucky where my grandparents used to go. They loved this church and I loved it too. It was my summer church and I got to know all the people here very well. I had many friends here and used to sing just about every Sunday I was there in the summer. Notably a church who affirmed me and my musical gifts as well as a person. This was taken through the glass, so that's why it's not clear. However, the inside looks very much the same. Except there was no padding on the pews when I went there. What a great trip we had!
The very famous Bybee Pottery that never happens to be open whenever I get there! However, we have been able to purchase pottery there over the years. But they are not open on the weekends.Just before going into Bob Evans to eat.The beautiful Main Street of Richmond, Kentucky - my birthplace and Mother's hometown - well sort of. She lived in Waco.Mother in front of the courthouse in Richmond. If she had facebook, this would be a great profile picture!!This swing was on the sidewalk in Richmond for by passers. Fun, eh? It's the small town thing you wouldn't find in the big city.
I think this is called the Daniel Boone or maybe just Boone Hotel in Berea, KY. This town is known for it's arts and crafts and once again since we were there on a Sunday, nothing much was open. But it was fun to window shop. This hotel was amazing. It was built at the request of the wife of the President of Berea college as a guest house, after one summer of entertaining over 300 guests in her own home. It's just a really neat town to walk around in.Most of the shops had these pretty window boxes in front. Now this is one shop I would have loved to go. The pottery, although not Bybee pottery, was absolutely gorgeous. They were so unique in color and shape. And our last big stop in Kentucky was Frisches Big Boy Retaraunt. Mother always loved their burgers here.
And they have great onion rings too! We sat at the bar to enhance our experience! Great fun! Great trip!

BLACKBERRY DAYS WITH BERRY GOOD FRIENDS!!

Wonderful weekend with our great friends ... Paul Pierce, Cindy and Larry Jensen. We are in Greenville for the 4th of July celebration. Had a great time. Ate at a new restaraunt for us called ... "Oysters on the West Side". Of course no one actually got oysters, but it was GREAT seafood. Then we saw a great concert by the Army Ground Forces Band that was amazing! Then at the last note of the concert, the fire works started. They were great too!
We decided to go blackberry picking on Saturday at "The Happy Berry" farm. This is only a few miles from our house and I am very happy about that. I LOVE BLACKBERRIES!! This farm is amazing ... it's huge and they have the biggest berries I ever saw. This bucket weighed 17 1/2 pounds!
We were getting our system down for washing the berries and planning what to do with them all.
Larry and Bob dried them outside in the breeze and then put them in qt. size bags for freezing.
Except for this bunch ... we made a blackberry pie! OH MY MY!!! It was soooooo good with vanilla ice cream! So of course, since I have frozen berries we can keep the pies coming for awhile.
